Bay Window wins multiple awards in MCCPA competition

The MCC Bay Window student newspaper continues on a path of excellence, as the staff

again won multiple awards in statewide competition sponsored by the Michigan Community

College Press Association.

Five of the individual awards were for outstanding individual writing in highly

competitive categories.

For the second year in a row, editor Amy Huber won first place in the humor column

category. This year’s winner was a tongue-in- cheek column about the legalization of marijuana.

Hubwe also won second place for a sports article on the MCC golf team, and third place for

Journalist of the Year, also for the second time.

Alex Batchelder also took first place for a sports column about fantasy football.

Eric Emmons won second place in news writing for his article last fall on why college

students don’t vote, and Levi Spring won second place for his review of a Kanye West concert he

attended.

“The individual writing categories are the most competitive,” said Sue Martens, Bay

Window advisor. “Nine community colleges from around the state participate, and each school

can submit up to three student writing entries in each category. So winning first or second place

out of up to 27 entries really is a big deal.”

Grace Dowling, graphic designer, took second for her original graphic of a game called

“MCC-opoloy” based on a Monopoly board.

Last year’s graphic designer, Rosie Balberde, won an honorable mention for graphics on

a center spread on pollution.

Zachary Thomas won second place for MCC’s online version of the Bay Window. This is

also his second award as online editor.

The BW staff received third place for general excellence and overall newspaper design,

both in Division II for smaller community colleges in the association.

Batchelder, Emmons, and Spring were all students in the COM 107 Introduction to

Journalism class last fall. Students’ weekly news and column assignments are published in the

fall issues of the Bay Window. Work-study students produce the winter issues.

Michigan community colleges in the competition include Delta College, Grand Rapids

CC, Henry Ford CC (Dearborn), Lansing CC, Monroe County CC, Northern Michigan College

(Traverse City), Schoolcraft CC (Livonia), and Washtenaw CC (Ann Arbor).
