Global Awareness Festival 2017 focus on Europe

GA logoMCC’s 18 th annual Global Awareness Festival taking place Feb. 13-17 will offer students

the opportunity to travel to Europe without ever leaving campus.

Co-ordinated by MCC faculty member Papa N’jai, this annual event is intended to teach

students about cultural differences. The festival focuses on a different region every year. This

year students will learn about, history, economics and foods of various countries located in

Europe.

“We have a responsibility to provide our students, staff and community with a greater

understanding of what’s happening in other parts of the world,” explained N’jai. “In an era of

globalization, we have to think globally. If we better understand other cultures and other people,

then we are better able to resolve cultural misunderstandings.”

Putting together a festival of this magnitude takes some major preparation, as well as a lot

of planning and searching for keynote speakers. This year there will be eight films (free

popcorn), a cooking demo, as well as various lectures and keynote speakers discussing multiple

global topics. Flags representing approximately 200 nations are displayed in campus hallways,

and a display of international artifacts from Latvia, Germany, and Great Britain are displayed in

the glass cases in Gerber Lounge.

From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday – Friday, international news coverage will be broadcast

in Collegiate Hall.

All events will be held in the Blue and Gold Room on the lower level unless otherwise

indicated.
