Entries are due Thursday, March 24, for the fourth annual “Art Talks Back Ekphrastic
Poetry Competition” sponsored by the Muskegon Museum of Art.
“Ekphrasis is a literary, often dramatic, description or commentary on a visual work of
art,” said Catherine Mott, curator of education at the MMA.
Adults and college area writers living in Michigan are invited to submit entries of original
ekphrastic poems for the competition. Entries must be based on one of a selected group of
artworks from the MMA’s permanent collection and the current exhibition “Common Ground:
African American Art.”
“Artwork images selected for the contest, contest guidelines, and entry forms can be
picked up in the MMA gift shop or downloaded from MMA’s website,” Mott said. The website’s
URL is <www.muskegonartmuseum.org>.
On Thursday, April 21, award winners will be announced and will read their poems at a
special reception. Awards include cash prices, MMA memberships, and gift certificates.
The Art Talks Back poetry project is sponsored by the Poetry Society of Michigan and
Muskegon County Clerk Nancy A. Waters and James L. Waters, attorney.
